About Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc
Sigma Lambda Beta (ΣΛΒ), founded on April 4, 1986 at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, is based upon four pillars: Brotherhood, Scholarship, Cultural Awareness, and Community Service. Baltazar Mendoza-Madrigal, a member of Phi Beta Sigma, expanded the possibility of a Latino-based organization with multicultural membership that would promote a positive image of the Latino Community at the University of Iowa and other universities located throughout the nation by scholastic achievements, eternal Brotherhood, the dissemination of our unique and rich culture, and service to our community.
Sigma Lambda Beta was created by our 18 Founding Fathers, of which 16 are of Hispanic or Latino descent. They helped shape our mission, which is to nurture and further a dynamic, values-based environment, which utilizes our historically Latino-based fraternity as a catalyst to better serve the needs and wants of all people.
With over 144 entities consisting of colonies, chapters, and alumni associations across the country and in Puerto Rico, Sigma Lambda Beta is the largest historically Latino Fraternal Greek Lettered intercollegiate fraternity in America.
